Clean MS Word Gobbledegook!
Word has formatted lettering. In short it introduces some gobblydegook and symbols that will screw up templates and sometimes posts. I use two methods, usually separately, to "clean them up".
1. I write often in Word, but I "clean" it (remove formatting) by copying and pasting into Notepad (plain-text editor), then copying that again before pasting it into the Blogger editor.
OR
2. I copy and paste the Word doc into Google Docs And Spreadsheets, then copy and paste that into the Blogger Editor. Sometimes this works when the other will not.
You CAN sometimes get away with using Word and it'll be okay. But then it will trip and stumble and screw up your blog when you're not looking! Apostrophes, quotation marks, or other symbols will appear and create havoc, and question marks will replace hyphens! I've found that the quotation marks in Word will screw up a link code (an anchor formula) because the machine is seeing it differently than you and I do!
Though Word is very good in its own arena, it's not worth being careless about pasting it directly into Blogger!
END.

EMERGENCY STEPS
| Kick-starting The Blog |
|---|
| 1. Refresh (F5) or Ctrl-F5
2. Clear cache (delete temporary Internet files) and cookies in Tools-Internet Options. 3. Add a question mark to the end of your blog's internet address in the address box and see if it will show the latest update. (Can also be done with other people's url's in the address window.) 4. Republish (if in classic Blogger) 5. Reboot 6. Log out and log back in again (may change to an untroubled server) 7. Change browser (IE, Firefox, others) ---Not necessary to do all of these at once!--- |
Blogger may make problems for some computers about accepting cookies, especially when you are using the new versions of Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. Difficulties with accepting scripts may be caused by security systems, antivirus programs, firewalls, and some add-ons. Check all your settings.
You may need to change your browser settings, or to list www.blogger.com and blogger.com as "trusted sites" in your Internet Options-Security so that scripting can occur.

Oh I have done this. Saved links list in word, in code. When I put it in the html the " was backwards. Such a tiny difference in code, makes a huge difference in a link.
ReplyDeleteHi Rat,
ReplyDeletedo you know what would be the Mac equivalent to Notepad? I'd like to save my template before I make some changes to it.
Thanks,
S.
I've asked around and may get an answer. Wait and see.
ReplyDeleteI use Notepad when I copy and paste and often find that no amount of cleaning it up before I post it helps. I end up having to go into the html many times to edit my posts when they've been pasted. Its a royal pain.
ReplyDeleteBut ... no matter what I post of the manner of getting it there ... I always proofread my published entries two and three and four times and clean up the mistakes. I guess I'm obsessive about it ... especially since I was a proofreader in another life! LOL
I find myself even correcting entries that are days, weeks and months old if I find something by chance that got by my eagle eyes!
I think that if you care enough to have a blog you should at least care enough to proofread your published entries at least once!
I too am a worrywart and have trouble turning loose!
ReplyDeleteSandra: I guess I don't know enough Mac users. I never heard the answer.
ReplyDeleteI wrote myself a little macro in Word "change smart quotes to straight quotes", solved a lot of problems; the I decide dto write a macro to change elisions (I've==>I have; wouldn't==> would not and so on).
ReplyDeleteSmart, but I would rather be able to retain the contractions. It isn't single and double quotation marks that are not accomodating to Blogger, it's the damn MS Word quotation marks!
ReplyDeleteHey Rat,
ReplyDeleteThanks for looking around.
I think I might have the answer!
If TextEdit is Mac - I have it on mine, but I have stuff from Windows too- it works like Notepad! Hourrah!
I'm now backing up my template on it- and it works great!
BTW - do you check your e-mails? ;-)
Keep it comin' saved my blog's ass a few times already!
My apostrophes keep getting something like this €™, but only in my emails posts. My posts on blogger.com look okay.
ReplyDeleteI'll give the copy and paste on notepad a try. Thanks.
Started using OpenOffice.org today and it seems to working better than notepad - had to correct all of my past posts, and I proofread them, don't know when the symbols showed up - maybe in a republish? Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteCopy/Paste from Word to the blogger editor worked fine for me for the longest time. Now it adds all kinds of html to try to make my text exactly what I had in Word - I suppose. Before, it was beautiful - retained text formatting, I had to format paragraphs - no bigger. But best of all, it handled footnotes by converting them to anchors with the text at the end of the post. Now, it's got all kinds of extra junk doing screwy things as I try to fix it. :-(

Dropped a note on your blog. Blop!
